The first foreign tour operator in Romania, a swedish company called Reseledaren, cancelled its services on the seaside at least for the 2007 season. At first this seems to be an unspectacular subject, since almost all foreign tourism operators already left the Romanian market. But there’s a hidden story behind the scandinavian name: in the ‘60s, during a harsh communist regime eager to seal every spot on Romania’s borders, Reseledaren contracted charter flights from Tarom and brought to Romania entire norwegian villages. Those people living beyond the Polar Circle lined up summer after summer for a two weeks break on Romanian beaches. This year Reseledaren was forced to erase Romania from its destinations map because of Tarom refusal to fly charters in the Artic.

His Excellency dr. Eldar Hasanov, Azerbaijan Ambassador in Romania announced during a visit to Constantza that Romania’s biggest port will be a key point on a new route for Caspian oil. According to the Ambassador, a memorandum signed by Azerbaijan and USA surprisingly mentions Romania as a gate for Caspian energy resources entering European Union. Azerbaijan is therefore interested in building an oil terminal in Constanza. The facility will belong to Azerbaijan and will take over some of the oil currently shipped by pipeline from Baku to Ceyhan in Turkey. [ continuare ]
Prof. Radu Pencea writes about the possible roles a forwarder may play, the story making reference to transport architects acting as consultants for producers. Competitivness is determined not only by technical characteristics of a product but also by its selling price, which in turn is determined by transport, logistics and distribution costs. This is why an investor will ask not only for marketing assistance, but also guidance regarding transport as well. A consultant-forwarder may recommend how, when, by what means and on which routes are to be shipped either raw materials to a production facility or products to the place of sale.
Closing an expedient deal is no simple matter. One needs information, ability, tact, strategy... And when the deal involves a foreign partner, it’s even harder to count only on personal skills. There are several cultural rules more important than usual politeness. [ continuare ]
Starting a courier business is a good idea since almost every company makes use of the services provided by players in this field. In theory, a Romanian start-up in the courier field requires only 30.000 Euros. However, competition is fierce, so a budget for success may be as high as 250.000 Euros. ”I’ve seen companies investing even 500.000 Euros and then going bankrupt in a few years. The amount of money isn’t that important. Know-how is the secret. And, of course, the conjuncture. Last but not least, it’s important to plan ahead, to run the numbers to see an evolution path“, says Octavian Badescu, secretary general of the Romanian Courier Operators Association. [ continuare ]
On 11th April, Ludovic Orban took over from Radu Berceanu as minister of Transports, and presented the main priorities of his mandate.
”There were many speculations that I will cancel infrastructure contracts. A canceling means blocking works and preserving them for an unknown interval, a possible lawsuit and eventually penalties for the state. I don’t like to engage in such adventures. Ministry’s interest is quick and state-of-the-art infrastructure works“, said Mr Orban.
