At the moment, the working market presents no different peculiarities, compared to those last year: stationary wages, blocked vacancies, sackings or even company’s bankruptcies. Waiting for new evolutions of the economy, employers keep their staff in a continuous hovering of uncertainty and deem expectations.

For this reason, employees’ motivation this year is more related to job security and less to financial incentives. Transport and logistics companies are cutting workforce costs and plan no wage increases this year. Although Corina Diaconu, managing director at ABC Human Capital, says there are signs of recovery in the matter and companies are willing to resume their own personnel expansion processes, employees think otherwise.

For example, Pierre Kosc, general manager of Calberson Romania, says that his company has no intention of recruiting in 2010 unless there is a striving need from the customers to be satisfied and that wages will be kept at 2009 levels. Without increased wages and with no performance bonuses, motivating employees becomes a challenge. According to Rodica Obancea, executive & team coach at Success Coaching, employees should take up responsibility for their career and focus on developing their skills.

But for this to work out well for both employers and employees, the latter need to be convinced that their job is secure. In other words, employees can be kept motivated with minimum costs if they are convinced that they would not lose their jobs.
