The equipments are designed to “communicate” with the locomotive, providing information on the maximum speed of movement and allowing even stop the train automatically in case of force majeure.
Obviously, it is crucial that... the railway speak the language of the locomotive, namely to ensure the perfect compatibility of the equipment. Placing the ERMTS aims to standardize signs railway, which would lead to the elimination of barriers to full liberalization of the market in rail transport services and expansion of international transport by rail, currently encumbered by the existence of over 20 different signaling systems across the European Union.
The agreement was signed by the authorities, producers of rolling stock, railway infrastructure managers and operators and provides the use of a single technical standard for all equipment installed ERMTS until 2012. After 2012, a new standard will be approved, but trains equipped with upgraded equipment will be able to run on the infrastructure and equipment at the old standard.
