The acquisition of Romtrans by DB Schenker was without doubt the most important takeover of last year in the transport business field of Romania. Mr. Albin Budinsky, designated CEO of DB Schenker Romtrans, the future name of both Romtrans and Romania’s branch of Schenker, disclosed some of the plans that the new German owners have for the development of the Romanian leader in freight forwarding, but also shared his views on anti-crisis actions badly needed, and referred to some of the market trends.

RBT: Which are the top priorities of DB Schenker Romtrans?

Albin Budinsky: Taking over Romtrans helped Schenker to become the Romanian market leader in freight forwarding quicker than it would have been if we had developed a network by ourselves. The first goal is to unite Schenker’s Romanian branch and Romtrans into one entity by the middle of this year. On the long term we want to consolidate our leadership and to focus our attention on local customers and domestic services.

RBT: Is DB Schenker especially interested to develop Romtrans’ activities in a specific geographical area or services segment?

A.B.: Our goal is to increase the volume and number of forwardings and we will also target small and medium enterprises, not only key accounts. We will not neglect services which may seem of minor importance to others, for example we will take profits out of the traditional role of Romtrans as logistics provider for Romexpo. Our main focus will be on the domestic groupage services that will be developed in such way as to be able to offer any customer the possibility to send palets anyway in Romania within 24 hours. With some 30 destinations and 35.000 speditions a year, Schenker Romania was already market leader in international groupage services and we want to be number one alsao on on the domestic market. Regarding geographical areas of main interest, it is obvious that Romania’s main economic activities are concentrated in the Western part of the country and Bucharest. Without neglecting some excelent facilities in the East, namely the mol in Constan¡a port and rail transshipment terminals in Iasi and Gala¡i, we want to develop modern hubs for domestic groupage in Bucharest, Arad and Cluj.
