Starting this month, accidents involving only material damage should engender less administrative fuzz for the drivers involved, with the possibility of amicable reporting, instead of compulsory police reporting.

However, since insurance companies are not fully prepared to apply the rules concerning the amicable report in case of accident, at least in the first days of July things are not that likely to change significantly.

The procedure of amicable report may be applied to all road accidents that involve two vehicles in Romania and which result in material damage only. Therefore, the major gain is that by eliminating reporting to the police, the guilty will not pay a fine and will not accumulate driver penalty points. Another advantage is that administrative procedures are simpler.

However, there are drawbacks too: those guilty of the accident will have to pay more for their insurance policies. ”The penalty for the guilty will be the increase of the insurance premiums in the year following the accident,“ said Angela Toncescu, president of the Insurance Supervisory Commission.
