The European Commission has authorized a state aid scheme proposed by Belgium to support alternative solutions for road transport.

With a budget of 3,5 million euros available until 2013, the state aid will be concentrated in the Walloon region of Belgium, and it is focused on supporting the development of goods transport by inland waterway, rail and combined transport. On one hand, the support of state financing consists in a 20% rate (for the large companies) or 30% (for the SME) of the investments in intermodal terminals, including expenses for land acquisition, for the required transshipment equipment and for the goods handling systems.

On the other hand, in the scheme of state aid, there is a subsidy provided for those operators transporting containers by inland waterway. The premium is intended to partially cover the costs of operating the vessel, and the share of support in this case is limited to 20% and 30%, depending on the size of the beneficiary.
