The Romanian Federation of Transport Operators (FORT, in Romanian) was quick to argue that charging fees for crossing the bridge at Fetesti-Cernavoda violate the EU accession treaty. Not only that the European Commission denies having received a request from FORT, but they also state that the communitarian aquis does not restrain a state that applies the vignette to collect taxes for transiting the bridges, tunnels and highways. That is because this entire infrastructure's crossing is perceived as payable provided services.
As a matter of fact, those who raise most of the protests, according to the current Ministry, are the truck drivers, who are not that comfortable with all the checking and paying when crossing the Danube. Not to mention that the costs for crossing, even if they are frozen since last year, seem to be very high and a deduction in prices would be useful.
Even more, a new and more efficient paying system could be of great use to the transporters, a card season ticket to be validated at every crossing saving time, pollution and fuel.
