Romanian Federation of Transport Operators (FORT, in Romanian) asked the Government at the end of November for a temporary exemption from paying the vignette. Nevertheless, the call, issued three days before the parliamentary elections, has been ignored.

FORT proposed suspension of the vignette payment from December 1st 2008 to March 1st 2009, claiming that road transport operators face big financial problems on economic crisis background, accumulating arrears in payment rates for leasing, commercial loans and state fees. “On the global economic crisis background, the decreased production capacity in Romania and the massive fall in the exports and imports amount, the Romanian transport companies are currently in the percentage of 45-50% over the threshold of bankruptcy”, as shown FORT in an open letter to the head of the Government.

The arguments meant to cause the Executive were “the decision would not affect even more the state budget, compared with the bankruptcy of 45-50% of the transport companies”, and on the activity shortage basis during the winter, the decrease in revenue brings about the risk of firing more than 150.000 employees of road operators.
