The last month fuel’s level rise in price, fact which cannot be thoroughly explained, has overcome all expectation. For the transporters, the growing prices at the gas stations is both an advantage, as it provides a justification for some tariffs increase, and a drawback, too, because of the need to reduce every other cost besides fuel.

Last month, the price of some ranges of fuel has exceeded 5 RON/litre, an all time record in Romania. It was the culmination of a trend best described by Eurostat statistics: gas prices in Romania registered last year the highest increase in the whole EU. Firstly, the representatives of the oil companies justify that calling upon the low evaluation of the US Dollar related to Romania’s currency. A second explanation consists of the fuel excise increase. Across 2009, the oil barrel price doubled – in December, the oil was sold on the international markets on 80 US Dollars, while in the early period of last year, and the minimum was of 35-40 Dollars/barrel.

The Businessmen’s Association of Romania (AOAR) labelled the rises in price as unjustified – the producers act coalition-like, while the authorities responsible and the Government have no reaction to this kind of economic movements. Yet, the authorities opposed a reaction, as the Competition Council announced having set off an investigation regarding the fuels’ advance in price.
