The 2009 Marco Polo call attracted 70 project proposals, for a total funding request of 224,1 million Euros against an annual programme budget of 61,3 million.

Nearly half of the project proposals target rail transport, about one third focus on short-sea shipping, and less than one tenth address inland waterways transport.

During last month, the European Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation evaluated all proposals with the help of a panel of external experts and European Commission representatives. The EACI will draw up a shortlist of proposals selected to receive Marco Polo funding, which will be put forward for the Commission’s approval by the end of this month.
