ICA Romania, the combined transport pace maker

RBT editia nr. 13/Noiembrie 2007 Articol adaugata la, 05 Noiembrie 2007 ( RBT )

Founded in 2000 to develop the road-rail freight transport, ICA Romania is the result of the Intercontainer Austria, Intercontainer-Interfrigo (Switzerland) and CFR Marfa association. Company activates on the local market as the operator of a terminal for the intermodal transport, in Oradea, and as an agent for Intercontainer Austria and Intercontainer-Interfrigo.

Within its 7 year history, ICA Romania provided the transporters and the forwarders with specialised combined transport trains, with a focus on the Italy, Hungary and Austria connections. The company was the pace maker for the combined transport, and still remains the only one in Romania which can operate the semi-trailers transport on well cars.

At the moment, the company organises combined transport on the Oradea-Wels route, on a 3 trains/week and direction basis.

On September 2006, ICA Romania launched in collaboration with TRW (Belgium) and Intercontainer Austria, a combined transport project on the Genk-Oradea route, called T-Rex (Trans-Romanian-Express), with a 3 trains/week and direction schedule. The trains are composed of flatcars meant for the containerized traffic and to mobile boxes transport. The project received a 1 million Euros funding under the Marco Polo European programme.

In the future, the company proposed itself to ensure a permanent connection between Constantza and Oradea for the rail containerized traffic. ”In the Western member states, shipping containers by truck is efficient on a maximum 150 km distance from the maritime terminal. The containers which must be delivered on a greater distance are transported on specialized trains and we think that will be Romania’s case, too“, said the ICA Romania general manager.
