Austria, a country with 8 million people is the greatest foreign investor in Romania, a market with 22 million consumers. Austrian companies lead some of the most important sectors of the romanian economy: banking and insurance system, oil industry, wood processing and recently real estate. Trade between the two country amounted to 2,22 billion Euros last year, a sum translated into huge volumes of merchandise hauled to and from Austria and Romania. His Excelency dr. Christian Zeileissen, Austrian ambassador in Romania, shared some of his opinions about the outlook of transports on the Romania-Austria route.

RBT: Some Austrian companies showed interest in using the port of Constanta as a gate for their exports. Do you think these are isolated initiatives or is there a general interest for Constanta in the Austrian business circles?

His Excelency Christian Zeileissen: There is interest, but from what I have seen during business meetings regarding Constanta I can tell you that the future of this port depends very much on its connections inland. As long as Constanta will be linked to the West with the present roads and rail, the possibilities are limited. As long as there are no modern roads from Constanta to Budapest, transport cannot be developed. When the motorways will be finished, in 2013 as I understood, the economical factors will react. They will have to react, because Constanta, a deep water port, has great potential. The other ports in the West - such as Hamburg or Rotterdam - cannot extend their facilities, so Constanta’s potential will be put to great use. But the time of Constanta will come when the infrastructure will be brought up to date.
