ROAD TRANSPORT Road hauliers continued their protests last month by blocking Bucharest’s by-pass road. They even threatened to bring downtown traffic to a standstill on May 13th, when hundreds of trucks were stationed at an entry point on Bucharest outskirts.

Policemen prevented the heavy goods vehicles from entering the capital, and when Internal Affairs minister warned truck drivers not to force the blockade, transporters backed down.

Romanian PM Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, who did not accept to talk to their representatives, also kept Road hauliers at bay. Tariceanu declared that he refused to talk to protesters if their intentions are political, but that he is ready to talk about real issues and problems.

With authorities on a strong position, transporters suspended protests and were pleased only with the promise that their problems would be listened and there will be some negotiations.
