The objective was to raise transport efficiency while enhancing road safety and environmental protection. The universal opinion at the symposium was that the use of longer trucks with greater transport volumes - called the EuroCombi modular concept - together with innovative logistics systems, is the right answer from the industry to the growing volume of freight traffic. At the same time the modular concept can realize in a sustainable manner the principle of co-modality provided for in the EU’s white paper. ”Field trials in Germany have shown that fuel consumption can be reduced by 15 to 30 per cent if longer trucks are deployed,“ stressed Matthias Wissmann, VDA President. Longer vehicle combinations can also help to make intermodal traffic more attractive by noticeably decreasing the costs of the sections of transport by road and thus ultimately also of the whole transportation, Wissmann continued. ”In view of the increased volume of transport that can be expected, we cannot simply ignore the options for raising efficiency offered by the modular system. There will still be enough transport for the railroads and inland waterways. And in addition we should not attempt to drive the modular concept forward on our own, but instead should try to find a consensus with the other modes of transport,“ Wissmann said.
