Announced in February by the Ministry of Transports and Infrastructure, the prospect of negative results recorded by SNTFM CFR Marfa in 2008 has been officially recognised last month.

But instead of a few million lei forecast in February, the preliminary loss announced in May was of 169 million lei. Although the financial situation has not improved, and the employees have received their wages with delay and only in part, the rail operator plans investments in rolling stock. The money will come from the EU budget.

After a bad news deluge about CFR Marfa, the Ministry of Transports and Infrastructure announced that the railway operator will access the up to  two million Euros for modernization of locomotives.

The rail operator will get the money by participating in a project headed by the Community of European Railways (CER) aimed at equipping locomotives with a command and control system (European Train Control System - ETCS), under the European Rail Traffic Management System programme.

Funding will be provided from the EU budget through the European Agency for the Coordination of TEN-T (Trans-European Transport Network), and through involvement, CFR Marfa will benefit from fitting two pilot locomotives with ETCS installations.
