According to the National Commission of Prognosis, 2008 will be a year with positive developments for the transport sector, with around 7,5% higher gross added value for the whole industry. Compared with 2007, there are no reductions expected in any category of transportation. The study is however thwarted by transport sector representatives, who suggest that increasing fuel prices may kill the profits. ”Results in the first half of the year are worse than in 2007, with balance sheets in the red for the most part of the small and medium transport enterprises.
The big players have developed other activities and are better off, but the transport activity on its own is a source of losses,“ said Radu Dinescu, Secretary General of the National Union of Romanian Road Transporters. Weighing about 7% in gross domestic product, transportation is regarded as the second category of services by importance in the tertiary sector of the economy, after commerce.
