No support but lots of restrictions

RBT editia nr. 10/August 2007 Articol adaugata la, 03 August 2007 ( RBT )
Afisari: 202

The European Commission recently gave its approval for an aid scheme to boost transportation by inland waterways in Belgium. Almost at the same time, the Romanian Ministry of Transports announced imminent tax increases for river and maritime operators. These facts apparently happened in different worlds within the same European Community.

A former high official in the Ministry of Transports illustrated the rigid approach when it comes to state aids destined to Romanian transporters: ”we can’t grants subsidies because EU won’t let us“. It now seems that such a point of view is wrong, since other countries within the Union are allowed to offer grants in the transportation field. While it is true that the Belgian grants amount only 450.000 Euros, it is important that even these money could be offered.

Far from offering even a single RON directly, Romanian ”help“ is represented by tariff increases, traffic restrictions and driving times regulations disregarding the lack of truck parkings
