Romanian international passenger transporters face an ill fate in spite of authorities efforts. By 2008, the Ministry of Transport Constructions and Tourism will conceive a new law for freight and passenger transport aimed at harmonising local regulations to European acquis. The new law will eliminate some current restrictions, such as forbidding international passenger transport in vehicles with less than 23 places (European regulations allow such transports with 9 place vehicles). Sorin Sarbu, general director of the General Direction Infrastructure and Road Transport in the Transport Ministry, admitted there are wrong restrictions and promised that the new law will correct all of them. Apparently, this means that minibus international transporters will be advantaged, but this isn’t the case. Some transporters believe the new regulations will mark a price drop for transports by small vehicles, because of reduced comfort and new operators enetering the market. Obviously, lower prices will lower the profits. This is why most of the operators are convinced that minibus transport will eventually disappear in spite of permissive regulations.
