Excessive level of port charges in Romania came last month to the attention of the Transports and Infrastructure minister, Radu Berceanu, who asked urgent cuts of the tariffs charged by the National Company Maritime Ports Administration Constanta (APMC).

Extremely beneficial for attracting new flows of goods, the decision to reduce rates has its adverse effects, whereas budgets are likely to be seriously imbalanced in a time when profit has already made way for losses in the balance sheets.

Amid the reduced freight traffic, the ports registered losses, and once the tariffs will be lowered, the losses will skyrocket. For example, the Giurgiu port had a 2,7 million RON loss since the beginning of this year, accounting for a mere 730.000 RON revenue against 3,5 million RON costs.
