Romania`s transport policy, part of the EU sustainable development strategy

As Professor Pencea writes, the adverse situation of transport infrastructure of the recently joined European Union countries determined the European Commission to support those in reaching the same level as the older member states.

Given the low stage of development of transport in Romania, EU’s and national interests coincide. For Romania, there is the possibility to adapt the needs and national interests to the EU principles in all modes of transport, because, unfortunately, the whole line of infrastructure is short.

The EU’s development strategy is based on a few principles, including reducing the pollution of the transport branch, increasing the transport safety, reducing the fuel consumption and the overall transport costs. The “motorway of the sea” and also the inland waterways are solutions to avoid the increasing pollution and sustainable transport environments.

Concerning our country’s efforts for the project, building the Bucharest-Danube channel and the reconstruction of the Bega channel would contribute to a lower level of pollution and to a more efficient transport activity. Consequently, action is required from the authorities, as statements are no longer enough.

Professor Pencea will resume the topic of the surface transport in terms of the communitarian principles in a following edition of our magazine.
