Tire market in Romania stands in the middle of the economic crisis, and there is a depression in the demand for tires as well. ”At the end of this year, perhaps sales will be approximately 10% lower than last year. Development in 2009 will depend decisively on the level of investment in the country, investments that are in direct relationship with the passenger and goods transport,“ stated Alice Hetzke, responsible for external communication at the Continental AG Romania.

From a qualitative point of view, tires designed primarily for the highway traffic are sensitive to poor Romanian road conditions. It seems that in Romania, the best-sold tires are those for regional transport, including the ones used for coaches. ”Sometimes, in order to reduce costs, trucks used on construction sites use tires for regional transport. And this proves to be a very bad choice,“ added Alice Hetzke. Such wrong choices are fought with technical arguments, as stressed by Irina Septilici, a Michelin representative: ”Researchers focus on providing fast, tangible solutions which would allow shipping companies to reduce their costs and increase productivity while optimizing the safety of their vehicles, stresses.“ In devising a new tire, engineers take into account several elements, such as the cost of the final tire, the yield kilometers, fuel consumption, safety, and noise comfort for passenger transport.
