Road hauliers asked last month for an additional profit tax on construction companies which make too big profits out of their involvement in infrastructure projects.

This request brought again in the public eye the correctness of the construction contracts which have as effects motorways extended at a snail’s pace and national roads continuously rehabilitated through a Sisyphus work. Some companies get a 40% profit margin on contracts with the state for building or modernizing transport infrastructure. And nobody would have a problem with such high margins if the roads’ quality would also be high. But as the reality states the opposite, with bumpy rehabilitated roads all over the country, something needs to be done.

Fairly enough, the Government managed to consider some ways of punishment for the road companies which don’t take their work seriously, but the mere disqualification from taking part in contract bids is not enough. The real answer would be to assure objectiveness when checking quality. And that should also come together with a sort of legislative and administrative commonsense for abiding the regulations, from all the authorities and characters involved.
