The CMR consignment note, renewed after 30 years

The general assembly of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) adopted a new model CMR consignment note to further harmonise and simplify international road transport operations and replace the former IRU model CMR consignment note, dating back to 1976. The changes adopted last month acknowledge the progress made in road transport and capitalizes on the 30 years of experience.
The new CMR note model is more user-friendly for transport operators, providing an explanatory note to help complete the simplified information required, while reducing the number of boxes to be filled in.
The new model CMR note remains in full compliance with the CMR Convention and meets the standards set in the United Nations Layout Key for Trade Documents (doc. ECE/TRADE/137).
The previous model CMR consignment note will remain valid, as the CMR Convention allows transport operators to choose the model CMR note they wish to use. However, it is strongly recommended to use the IRU’s new model, as it better serves the interests of road transport operators.
