The giant shows signs of weakness

RBT editia nr. 16/Februarie 2008 Articol adaugata la, 04 Februarie 2008 ( RBT )

World’s biggest shipping company - the Danish Maersk, has announced drastic cost cutting measures. Until April, it will slash some 10% of its staff and restructure its divisions.

The company said that the streamline program, designed to cut costs and boost profits, would involve reducing the number of regional units to 11 from 14 and also moving the trucking, rail, and logistics activities from the division. The 500 container ships fleet will not be affected, and it might even grow in size next year.

Reading between the lines, analysts said that the company admits it is too bulky and cost-intensive. The problems occurred when Maersk merged with N&O Neddland and the resulting giant lost some of its ability to quickly answer customers’ needs.
