Under pressure from competitors, the ones that are involved in performing transports - hauliers, carriers, port terminals or logistics centers operators - must permanently come up with solutions to temper or stop the raising costs of their services.
Prof. Pencea suggests a few ways of reducing the transport and distribution costs:
• Firstly, one would rather use means of transports with a capacity as great as possible. The economy of scale attests that doubling a ship’s capacity cuts fuel consumption by almost 30%, while personnel costs remain constant.
• Secondly, reducing the transshipment time is also a solution.
• Loading means of transport at full capacity.
• Moreover, to reduce the multimodal transport costs, there is a need to look for the routes, which allow delivering by ship (either seagoing or barge), or by train.
• Even more, reducing the distance from the place of manufacture to the selling point can be cost efficient, together with the consolidation, which consists of collecting freight from many customers by the same carrier.
