UNTRR requires support for road operators

RBT editia nr. 32/Iunie 2009 Articol adaugata la, 01 Iunie 2009 ( RBT )
Afisari: 297

The National Union of Road Hauliers from Romania (UNTRR) has amplified at the local level demands voiced by the International Road Transport Union (IRU) in the form of an official request for state support for road operators.

A press release from the UNTRR draws the attention on the problems of the local road transport sector, claiming that 20% of the 25.000 freight transport operators and of the 5.000 passenger transport operators in Romania could go bankrupt in 2009 and 40.000 of the current employees in transportation might lose their jobs before year’s end.

Admitting that the road transport is a major force powering the economy, and road vehicles are a key element of the supply chains, UNTRR asks the authorities to invest in infrastructure which would result in avoiding bottlenecks and cut costs, assist the carriers to enable them to continue to invest in innovative and cleaner vehicles, ensure rapid and effective absorption of EU funds and keep up with a sustained pace in the highways construction, which will, among other things, reduce unemployment and ease traffic flow. Last but not least, UNTRR asks for a reduction of current taxes and cancelling any new charges, as they threaten the economic recovery and competitiveness.
