Last month, the list of 10.342 employees to be let go at 13 rail companies under state control was shliced to only 6.380 employees of CFR Marfa freight operator and then further down to a mere 5.600. Only 130 employees among the managerial staff and 5.470 form lower echelons are to be fired according to the latest programme presented by the ministry. According to Iulian Mantescu, president of the locomotive drivers’ union, there would be no opposition against layoffs, but only if the people let go would get compensations. Even more, for 2010, while the layoffs are not yet a state of fact, frozen wages are.
And not only CFR Marfa will be affected. According to Tudor ªerban, secretary of state in the Ministry of Economy, the financial results for the last year are negative for all big rail companies - CFR Infrastructura, CFR Calatori, CFR Marfa and Metrorex, which means all employees of these companies, will have frozen wages.
