Volvo launches a new generation of alcolocks

RBT editia nr. 12/Octombrie 2007 Articol adaugata la, 02 Octombrie 2007 ( RBT )

Given Volvo’s initiative, the ADR transport will now on benefit from a factory-fitted generation of alcolocks. Being the first system in the world that is type-approved for transportation of dangerous goods, the new alcolock has one important point in its favor: the calibration is not needed more than once every twelve months.

The alcolock is simple to use and features a starter inhibitor. The system consists of a central unit and a hand-held remote unit with a disposable mouthpiece and a display screen. If the driver’s breath contains traces of alcohol, the central unit cuts the current supply to the starter motor, fuel pump or ignition system and the engine remains silent.

The new device was created in order ”to support the Swedish government’s initiative on the introduction of alcolocks as standard in vehicles throughout the EU“, said Lennart Pilskog, Director Public Affairs at Volvo Trucks.

Additionally, Volvo representative expressed his belief in a decreased number of accidents that are liable to happen on the European roads, with “devastating consequences”, as follows the introduction of the new device on the vehicles carrying goods such as „explosive gases or corrosive liquids.”
